Teacher's Day in Thailand (16/01)

Professional holiday of Thai education workers — Teacher's Day — was established in 1956 at the proposal of the Prime Minister Field Marshal of Thailand P. Pibulsongkrama (P. Pibulsongkram), at the time also the honorary chairman of the Board of Directors of the teachers' committee.

Addressing greetings to all teachers in Thailand, Pibulsongkram said that teachers for everyone without exception — are people who bring light to life. They should have a holiday on which students can congratulate their mentors and express their feelings of gratitude.

The minister also said that during the European New Year celebrations and during the Songkran — Thai New Year — festival, all Thais thank parents and relatives, living and gone, glorifying their names and praying to their souls. Teachers occupy the next place after their parents in the life of every person — is no less important and honorable.

Thus, on November 21, 1956, the Cabinet of Ministers approved a resolution to celebrate Teacher's Day in the country annually on January 16. This professional holiday was first celebrated on January 16, 1957.

Since then, this day has been celebrated by everyone involved in the field of education. Teacher's Day — is truly a national, beloved and very emotional holiday. On this day, students give their mentors flowers and gifts, organize fun holidays for them and sing songs of praise.

On this day, religious ceremonies are also held to pay tribute to teachers and their noble work.
