World Heart Day (29/09)

The purpose of Day — is to raise public awareness of the dangers caused by the world's cardiovascular disease epidemic, as well as to initiate comprehensive preventive measures against coronary artery disease and cerebral stroke in all groups of the population. World Heart Day is held under the motto «Heart for Life».

Currently, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death and disability in the world — they claim more than 18 million lives every year. Cardiovascular diseases are understood as a group of heart and blood vessel diseases, which includes: coronary heart disease; cerebral vascular disease; peripheral artery disease; rheumatic carditis; congenital heart disease; deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Risk factors for CVD and stroke include: high blood pressure, blood cholesterol and glucose levels, smoking, insufficient consumption of vegetables and fruits, overweight, obesity and physical inertia.

By the way, an unhealthy lifestyle, which leads to the development of cardiovascular diseases, is most often formed in childhood and adolescence, and with age the risk of cardiovascular diseases only increases. Therefore, prevention should begin from childhood.

In addition to a healthy lifestyle, in modern society it is necessary to develop a culture of health, which includes regular medical observation for early detection of diseases and risk factors for their development, stress control skills, and techniques for maintaining health in an aggressive environment and deteriorating environmental situation.

According to the World Heart Federation, 80% of premature deaths from heart attacks and strokes can be prevented by leading a healthy lifestyle, controlling tobacco use, nutrition and physical activity.

On World Heart Day, health organizations partner with WHO and the World Heart Federation to host events in more than 100 countries. The Day program includes mass health checks, public lectures, performances, scientific forums, exhibitions, concerts, festivals, organized walks and sports competitions. Each year, events held as part of Heart Day focus on a specific topic related to heart health. In Russia, this day and the week following it are called Russian National Healthy Heart Week.
