International Stuttering People's Day (22/10)

Every year on October 22, since 1998, the world has celebrated International Stuttering Awareness Day or International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD).

The idea of establishing this date was born with the support of the International Stuttering Association (ISA), founded in 1995 and positioning itself as the «rupor of all stuttering people at the international level». According to ISA data, about 1% of the world's population suffers from stuttering — is about 80 million people.

According to the International Classification of Diseases, stuttering is a speech disorder that is characterized by frequent repetition or prolongation of sounds, syllables and words, as well as frequent stops or indecisiveness in speech, breaking its rhythmic course.

Russian speech therapy literature interprets the term «zaiqaniye» as follows: «violation of the tempo-rhythmic organization of speech due to the convulsive state of the muscles of the speech apparatus». Stuttering is often associated with logophobia (verbophobia) — fear of saying what is the consequence or cause of stuttering.

If society treats people who stutter incorrectly, this speech disorder can have a serious impact on a person’s emotional state, and therefore life. Which often leads to stress, social anxiety and self-isolation. Children who stutter are often the target of bullying.

Therefore, organizing the International Day of Stuttering People — is only one of the large-scale ISA projects. On this Day, which is dedicated to a specific topic every year, various conferences, seminars, meetings and a number of social events are held aimed at raising awareness among the general community about the problems and difficulties that stuttering people face in everyday life.

Other ISA projects conducted for the same purpose include — newsletter twice a year, maintaining a special website, and finding funds for scholarships for stuttering people.

By the way, many people did not prevent such a speech impediment as stuttering from becoming famous and realizing themselves in those areas where the ability to speak beautifully is required. Among them are — film directors, actors, bards, speakers, politicians, poets, commanders, clergy, TV presenters and other representatives of public professions.

For example, Demosthenes, George VI, Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe, Isaac Newton, Bruce Willis, Gerard Depardieu and other famous people suffered from stuttering.
