Webmaster Day (04/04)

April 4 marks the unofficial professional holiday — Webmaster (or Webmaster) Day.

The date of this holiday was not chosen by chance: if you look closely, you will notice that the numbers 4.04 are very reminiscent in their spelling of error 404 («Page not found»), which is directly related to the work of webmasters. In addition, this date coincides with International Internet Day.

Webmaster, or « site manager, » is a person who develops websites or applications for the Internet. This profession appeared in the 1990s — in the age of Internet development.

The term «webmaster» was first coined by «forefather» of the Internet Tim Berners-Lee in the document «Style Guide for Online Hypertext» («Style Guide for Online Hypertext») in 1992. In the early 1990s, when the « public» Internet was just beginning to develop, the functionality of the first webmasters was very diverse: it included the responsibilities of a web designer, author and site moderator, programmer, system administrator, content manager (responsible for semantic content of the site), site technical support employee.

With the development of the Internet and the emergence of larger sites, their development technologies have improved, which has led to the separation of webmaster specializations into different professions.

By the way, it turns out that unlike the Russian language, where there is no female form of the name of this profession, in English female webmasters are sometimes called «web mistress» (English webmistress), but this form is not widely used.
