World Promotion Week «We clean the world» («Clean the planet from garbage») (21/09)

The « campaign Let's cleanse the planet of debris», which later received world status, was first carried out in September 1993 by residents of Australia – they went out en masse to clean ocean beaches. Gradually, other countries joined the action, and today millions of volunteers from 100 countries around the world are already participating in it.

Residents of different continents specifically set aside a week in September to collect and sort garbage in their hometown or go for environmental purposes to some other point on the planet. Many cities host educational events on the environmental and economic benefits of waste recycling. People clear garbage from recreation areas, beaches, forest parks and reservoirs, suburban areas and rivers, hold actions «Waste has no movement», «Park instead of landfills», «Attack on plastic», plant trees, organize exhibitions, concerts and press conferences.

Relevance of the « campaign Let's cleanse the planet of » garbage has especially increased in recent years. Every year humanity becomes more and more «consumer society». On average, about 20 tons of raw materials are spent per person on Earth per year, most of which (up to 97%) goes to waste, which gives rise to mountains of garbage, already nicknamed the « monsters of the 21st century». They frighten not only with their scale, but also with the potential danger they pose to the health and life of living organisms, since they lead to groundwater pollution and the spread of harmful gases.

The goal of the global campaign «Let's cleanse the planet of garbage» – to draw people's attention to the problems of environmental pollution and littering of the planet, as well as develop their skills in economic attitude towards the world around them and improve the level of environmental culture and literacy.

«Humanity will not die in an atomic nightmare, it will suffocate in its own waste», – said the once famous physicist Niels Bohr. By organizing this and other similar global environmental actions, environmentalists are trying their best to ensure that Bor’s words do not become prophetic…
