World Pet Day (30/11)

Every year on November 30, many countries celebrate World Pets Day. It is dedicated to all animals domesticated by humans and serves as a reminder to all humanity of responsibility for our smaller « brothers.

It is not surprising that the motto of this Day was the words of the Little Prince from the work of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: «You are forever responsible for those who have been tamed by», who are addressed to all people.

The idea of holding this holiday, which is relevant today, was first voiced back in 1931, at the International Congress of Supporters of the Nature Protection Movement, in Florence (Italy). Then various environmental organizations and environmental societies declared their readiness to organize various public events aimed at instilling in people a sense of responsibility for all life on the planet, including pets.

Today, events dedicated to the Day are very diverse and take place in each country in its own way. Somewhere there are pickets in defense of animals from cruelty, somewhere flash mobs in support of the creation of a shelter or clinics for animals, somewhere exhibitions of cats and dogs, etc. And someone on this day allows their pets to do everything that was previously prohibited (tearing wallpaper, chewing furniture and slippers, climbing curtains, eating from the table...), or buys their pet a huge amount of goodies, and someone simply pays maximum attention to his feathered, waterfowl or four-legged friend.

By the way, among the actions of recent years, which are becoming increasingly widespread throughout the world, is the — promotion «Bell», when in zoos of any city or country children ring bells for one minute, thereby drawing everyone’s attention to animal protection problems.

But, no matter how you celebrate this day, the main goal of holding all actions and events – is to update the attention of the general public (and first of all — of the younger generation) to the problems of pets (including homeless people); instilling a careful attitude towards them (and wildlife in general), responsibility for their content and understanding that they are — « brothers, our smaller», not an object of entertainment. As animal owners note, finding an approach to any pet is easy — you just need to love it, and it will reciprocate.

In Russia, Pet Day has been celebrated since 2000 on the initiative of the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Cruelty towards animals is acquiring horrific proportions in the country. Article 245 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation provides for punishment for those who, through their hooligan actions, sadistic inclinations, and selfish motives, injure animals or lead them to death.

After all, when starting an animal, it is important not to succumb to a momentary impulse, but it is necessary to study the nature of the pet, the conditions of detention, and the intricacies of care. Many simply do not understand that an animal in the house — is a full-fledged family member who needs not only to be loved, but also to be given time, raised correctly, and treated if necessary. Maintaining some breeds of cats and dogs takes not only a lot of time and effort, but also a significant part of the money.

But it must still be said that Russians love cats, dogs, rabbits, parrots and other animals very much, and every year on Pet Day, many events are held by public, environmental, educational organizations and structures — round tables and seminars on the topic of caring for pets; exhibitions of cats, dogs and other pets, competitions and quizzes dedicated to them; fundraising campaigns and feed for animals living in shelters.

Today's date calls on everyone to join this good and important holiday, the main thing is to remember — we are responsible for those we have tamed…

Let us remind you that World Animal Day is celebrated annually on October 4.
