Day of Healthcare and Medical Industry Workers in Turkmenistan (10/10)

Turkmen healthcare and medical industry workers annually celebrate their professional holiday on October 10. The holiday is not a day off, but is included in the official list of professional holidays in the country.

It must be said that since 2009, the Day of Healthcare and Medical Industry Workers in Turkmenistan has been celebrated on July 21. On this day in 1995, the country established the state program «Saglyk» («Health») to reform the healthcare system. But in August 2019, by decision of the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, this professional holiday was postponed from July 21 to October 10.

Currently, the healthcare sector in Turkmenistan is becoming increasingly important and receiving more attention from the state. The country has a state program for the development of healthcare, as well as various programs and strategies aimed at improving the health of the nation. Some of them concern the health of children and preparing them for the school period of life, others are aimed at combating smoking, preventing and treating various diseases, promoting a healthy lifestyle, etc.

A large role in the development of medicine is given to improving and modernizing the material and technical base of medical institutions: the construction of new medical centers, hospitals, clinics, equipping them with modern diagnostic and medical equipment, repairing old medical institutions and replacing outdated equipment there with new ones. Its own pharmaceutical production and sanatorium-resort institutions are gradually developing.

The impossibility of developing the health care system and improving the quality of medical services without the availability of highly qualified personnel is also taken into account. To this end, the system of training and education of medical staff and advanced training is being improved, both on the basis of our own medical educational institutions and with the training of students abroad.

The development of the healthcare system in Turkmenistan is also facilitated by an established exchange of experience with medical representatives from Russia, Europe and China.

On this day, the President of Turkmenistan addresses health workers with a congratulatory speech, expressing words of gratitude to the people whose calling and work guard the health of the nation. The capital of Turkmenistan, as well as many large cities of the country, hosts ceremonial festive events and concerts. This is often accompanied by the presentation of professional awards, prizes, and valuable gifts. Also, medical forums and the opening of new medical institutions are timed to coincide with Healthcare Workers Day.
