World Humanism Day (21/06)

World Humanist Day is celebrated annually on June 21. The holiday does not have official international status, but is recognized by many humanistic organizations whose goal is to protect human rights and freedoms, defend the ideas of social justice, peacefulness, human dignity and equality.

The activities of such organizations contribute to the development of civil society institutions, and also remind government agencies that man – is one of the basic values, and his rights and freedoms are at the basis of any civilized society.

The initiator of the organization of the holiday was the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU), whose World Congress was held in Oslo in 1986. Today, one of the members of the European Humanist Federation (EHF) is a participant in all events and actions taking place as part of World Humanism Day.

The promotion of humanistic ideas is carried out through the organization of lectures, interactive events, flash mobs, held not only «live» with everyone who wants to take part in them, but also through the Internet, television, and social networks.

The basic values proclaimed at these humanistic events, as well as the democracy contained in the – programs, based on the rights and freedoms of a person capable of building his life and building the life of society through reason, providing a wide range of opportunities, abandoning the supernatural interpretation of the world, its structure and purpose person. Man and his abilities are proclaimed a value that is capable of building a modern humanistic society based on kindness, mercy, peacefulness, mutual understanding and justice. In this case, social responsibility becomes the main regulator of a person’s personal freedom.

The ideas of humanism, permeated with the song of reason, atheism, rationalism and the proclamation of man as the central figure of the world, are far from new. However, for all their euphony, the implementation of many principles of humanism often took exaggerated forms in history, refusing to accept a different worldview, destroying traditional values without any regard for the principles that should have guided them and which she called her unquestioned values.

Hence, the following message becomes important: «humanism should not turn into an idol», devouring everything in its path. An attempt to turn a person into «absolute» can turn out very disastrous for the person himself.
