World Candy Day (18/10)

October 18 is the holiday of everyone who is partial to sweets. World Candy Day brought together not only those who cannot deny themselves the pleasure of eating their favorite candy, but also those who are directly related to the production process of this delicacy.

For some, – candy is a favorite sweet, and among the huge variety of types, each sweet tooth has its own taste preferences: caramel, chocolate, candies, toffees, etc. There are others who flatly deny themselves the pleasure of eating candy, considering it too sweet and a high-calorie product. For some, candy simply ceases to be a coveted delicacy over time along with changes in taste preferences, but there is hardly a child indifferent to candy!

There is an opinion that candies appeared back in the era of Ancient Egypt, and this happened by coincidence, that is, by chance, when the contents of overturned vessels mixed: nuts, honey and figs.

Arabic or oriental sweets have been famous throughout the world and continue to be popular to this day. It was the Arabs who were the first to use sugar in making sweets.

Various nuts, as well as dried fruits, were also a constant ingredient. In Rus', candies were made using maple syrup, honey and other products. At that time, all sweets were a handmade product, and often became the fruit of imagination, creative thought and confectionery experimentation. This is how new ideas and new types of sweets were born, including sweets.

It is worth noting that people have long noticed – sweet foods have the quality of lifting your mood and even vigor. This was the reason why chocolates were sold at one time in pharmacies! «Cooked, made» literally means the word «candy» translated from Latin. Pharmacists offered candy as a remedy for cough and nervous disorders. Today, researchers claim the production of so-called happiness hormones during chocolate consumption. So the term «candy», introduced by pharmacists, later began to designate one of the types of confectionery products.

The 20th century turned the process of creating candy into mass production. On the one hand, this solved the problem of the cost and availability of sweets for the general population, but at the same time the creative process of creating a natural product was lost. Chemical components are currently contained in most sweets, which, along with their high calorie content and sugar content, turns the delicacy into a product, the consumption of which in large quantities becomes simply harmful. Against this background, as well as against the backdrop of an increasingly popular healthy lifestyle, including healthy eating, the tradition of creating handmade natural sweets began to revive. The cost of such sweets is much higher, however, the usefulness of the product, as well as its originality, is gradually attracting more and more fans to it.

Confectioners, manufacturing companies, and trademark owners try to take part in annual events dedicated to World Candy Day. It will not be difficult to find information on the Internet about the largest or most unusual shaped sweets.

Festivals, carnivals, exhibitions, and master classes on creating handmade sweets are timed to coincide with the holiday. Candy at these events becomes the best gift for children, because they remain the most devoted fans of this delicacy.
