Independence Day of the Republic of Azerbaijan (28/05)

Every year since 1992, on May 28, Azerbaijan celebrates the public holiday — Independence Day (Azerbaijan). Müstəqillik günü), which until 2021 was called Republic Day (Azerb. Respublika günü).

It was established in honor of the declaration of independence of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) by the National Council of Azerbaijan in 1918. On the same day, the signing of the Declaration of Independence took place in the hall of the former Palace of the Viceroy in the Caucasus in Tiflis (today — Tbilisi).

However, in April 1920, units of the Red Army, having defeated the remnants of Denikin’s troops, crossed the Azerbaijani border and entered Baku on April 28. On the same day, the creation of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic (Azerbaijan SSR) on the territory of the ADR was announced.

Despite the fact that the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic lasted only 23 months, it left an important mark on the history of national statehood. And subsequent years and decades constitute significant stages in the life of the country, marked by bright events and great achievements of the Azerbaijani people. It was all this, taken together, that created the economic, intellectual and cultural potential of the current independent Azerbaijan.

In honor of this event, one of the streets, a metro station, is named in Baku, and a stele with the text of the Declaration of Independence (in Arabic and Latin) was installed on Istiglaliyat Street (Independence). In Tbilisi, on the wall of the hall of the former Viceroy's Palace in the Caucasus, there is a memorial plaque with an inscription in Azerbaijani, Georgian and English.
