Blukas holiday in Lithuania (23/12)

Blucas — is a special day that is a symbol of the unfinished worries and unfulfilled desires of the outgoing year. And the Blucas holiday itself — is, accordingly, a kind of preparation for the New Year, when everything old, unfinished and bad must be left in the past and prepared for the new, good.

It must be said that many peoples have similar holidays and their own characteristics of their celebration. In Lithuania, on this holiday, according to ancient custom, with the onset of the darkest time of the year, the old stump — of Blukas was dragged through the courtyards.

After all the courtyards in the village have been passed, such a stump is burned, which means — past worries end, and preparations begin for the creation of a new world. The night stops lengthening and the sun gradually returns.

Today, mummers, folk ensembles and theater groups take part in this holiday. There is laughter, fun and folk festivals everywhere. After all, the New Year itself is just around the corner!
