Security Day of Ukraine (25/03)

On March 25, 1992, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Law "On the Security Service of Ukraine". Since 2001, according to the Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 193/2001, this day is celebrated as the Day of the Security Service of Ukraine (Ukrainian "Day of the Security Service of Ukraine").

After the declaration of independence of Ukraine, the question arose of the need to reform the former union-republican system of state security agencies. On September 20, 1991, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a resolution "On the establishment of the National Security Service of Ukraine". The State Security Committee of the Ukrainian SSR was liquidated by the same resolution.

The most important activities of this Ukrainian special service are intelligence and counterintelligence.

The tasks of the Security Service, defined by law, include: counteracting the plundering of state or collective property on an especially large scale, theft or illegal use of budgetary funds; implementation of counterintelligence work in the financial and credit-banking systems, in the areas of privatization, foreign economic activity; fight against terrorism and drug trafficking, illegal migration.

According to the law, the Security Council must also carry out information and analytical activities in order to assist the leadership of Ukraine in implementing the foreign and domestic policy of the state, strengthening its defense capability and economic potential, and expanding international cooperation.
