Second Sunday of Advent (04/12)

In many Churches celebrating the Nativity of Christ on December 25, the pre-Christmas period begins four weeks before the holiday. In some countries it is called Christmas fasting, in some — there is no specific name for this period, but most often these four weeks are called Advent.

The word «advent» comes from the Latin «adventus», which means «coming», «coming». The first written mention of Advent —, a four-week period of preparation for Christmas —, was discovered in the 6th century (in 524), when the Synod of Bishops in Lleida banned wedding celebrations from Advent itself until Epiphany.

Different countries of the world have developed original national traditions associated with this period, but now, at the beginning of the third millennium, typical signs indicating the onset of Advent — wreath and the Advent calendar.

Second Sunday of Advent

The second Sunday of Advent is celebrated exactly one week after the first Sunday of Advent. On this day, the Candle of Prophecy and the second candle in the wreath of Advent — of Bethlehem are lit. The candle of Bethlehem represents the coming to earth of Jesus, the Son of God, born of the Virgin Mary. It is a light symbol of preparation for the meeting of the Christ Child.
