Day of Physical Culture and Sports of Ukraine (Ukrainian). Physical Culture and Sports Day is celebrated in the country annually on the second Saturday of September on the basis of Presidential Decree № 340/94 of June 29, 1994. Its main goal is — to introduce the population of Ukraine to sports and physical education, as well as — to promote an active healthy lifestyle.

European sports such as football and wrestling began to spread here from the late 19th century. Ukrainian athletes won many victories, performing in various sports as part of the USSR national teams. Legends of Ukrainian sports are: jumper Sergei Bubka, football players Oleg Blokhin and Igor Belanov, awarded the «gold ball» as the best football players in Europe.

In total, Ukrainian athletes won more than four hundred Olympic medals. And today the new generation continues to perform successfully in world sports arenas.

On the holiday itself, as a rule, sports competitions, competitions, marathons and other mass sporting events are held in populated areas of Ukraine, the winners of which are awarded certificates and valuable gifts. In Ukrainian educational institutions, also on this day, or on the eve, all kinds of competitions and competitions in physical culture and sports are organized. Another tradition of this holiday is — honoring veterans of Ukrainian sports.
