Transfiguration of the Lord (19/08)

On August 19, the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates the great Christian holiday — Transfiguration of the Lord God and Our Savior Jesus Christ.

To show His disciples this Heavenly spiritual glory that will follow temporary suffering, the Lord was transformed before his disciples Peter, James and John on Mount Tabor — His face shone like the sun, His clothes became white as light.

Two Old Testament prophets appeared — Moses and Elijah — and talked with the Lord about His near departure. A cloud dawned on them, and a voice was heard from it: «This is My beloved Son, O Him you are pleased, listen to Him».

By celebrating the Transfiguration of the Lord, the Church solemnly confesses and glorifies the union of the Divine and humanity in the person of Jesus Christ. By His Transfiguration, the Lord favored protecting His disciples from despondency and elevated them to the highest hope among the disasters that were to befall them in the world.

The Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord belongs to the 12 largest Orthodox holidays. People call this day the Second Savior.

This is a traditional harvest festival — in churches the fruits of the earth are blessed, that is, apples, pears, plums. Apples are the most popular and honored; there is even a third name for the holiday — Apple Savior.

Beekeepers are especially preparing for this day. They need to sanctify hives and treat their neighbors, especially orphans, the infirm and disadvantaged, to honey.

The Catholic Church celebrates this holiday on August 6, and in the tradition of the Armenian Church, the Feast of the Transfiguration is included in the Easter cycle, is mobile and is celebrated on the seventh Sunday after Pentecost.
