Statehood Day of Serbia (15/02)

Every year on February 15, Serbia's Statehood Day (Dan Drzhavnosti Srbije) — is celebrated as the country's main national holiday. It is also known as the Day of the First Serbian Uprising.

At the Presentation of the Lord in 1804, at a meeting of the most prominent governors of Serbia in Orasac, the first Serbian uprising was raised against the Turkish yoke under the leadership of Karageorgi (Georgi Petrovich). Although it did not return state independence to Serbia, it made life noticeably easier for the Serbs and created a solid base for the so-called Second Serbian Uprising.

Therefore, today in the Republika Srpska this event itself is celebrated — Day of the first Serbian uprising.

In addition, on February 15, 1835, the so-called Sretensky Constitution — was adopted, the first democratic Constitution of Serbia (however, soon abolished under pressure from the Porte, Austria and Russia).

Also on this date — February 15 — marks another public holiday — Serbian Army Day.

Therefore, in honor of so many important dates, many ceremonial and memorable events are taking place throughout the country. In particular, congratulatory speeches from the leadership of Serbia are heard in the media, and top officials of the state, senior military officials and representatives of various public and non-governmental organizations participate in laying wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Hero on Avala, in Marichev Ravine, near the monument to Karadjordja Petrovic and at other memorial sites. Commemorative services are held in many churches across the country.
