Day of adoption of the Resolution on the separation of the Mejimur region from the Hungarian state (09/01)

Every year on January 9, Croatia celebrates the memorable date – Day of adoption of the Resolution on the separation of the Mejimur region from the Hungarian state.

For many centuries, Međimurje was part of Hungary, which had a significant influence on the history and culture of the Međimurje.

Medjimurj is an area shaped like a triangle in northern Croatia. It is the smallest area in size that exists in Croatia, but is nevertheless the most densely populated.

The main city of Medjimurje is Čakovec, located 90 kilometers from the Croatian capital Zagreb.

On January 9, 1919, a large number of people gathered in Čakovec in the square in front of the Franciscan Church, who unanimously adopted a resolution according to which Medzhimurje was leaving Hungarian jurisdiction and joining Croatia.

In 2005, the Law on Holidays, Memorable Dates and Weekends of the Republic of Croatia was amended to make January 9 an official memorial day.
