Grapefruit Gathering Festival in Cuba (01/03)

Grapefruit — is an evergreen tree of the citrus genus, the rue family, as well as its fruit, reaching a diameter of 30-40 centimeters. Outwardly, grapefruit looks like an orange, but its pulp is more sour and has a taste of bitterness. Despite this, grapefruit is unconditionally classified as a dietary fruit.

Presumably, grapefruit is the result of natural hybridization of oranges and pomelos.

Until the 1950s, the origin of the fruit was unknown, however, it was later discovered that it was first discovered in the 1750s, presumably in Barbados. It was originally considered an ornamental plant. Now grapefruit plantation collection is one of the most profitable enterprises in subtropical countries, including Cuba.

The agricultural center of the country where the most grapefruits are collected is the small island of Juventud. It is there, at the end of February or beginning of March, that a holiday dedicated to harvesting citrus fruits begins. In terms of the breadth of the Cuban soul, such a holiday lasts several days and nights, flowing into targeted festival performances.

In addition to a variety of performances, dances and concerts, all festival guests can, of course, taste a huge amount of fruit salads, desserts, hot dishes and refreshing drinks with grapefruit. Here you can try and discover completely unexpected dishes made from this fruit.

The holiday ends with a big grapefruit feast!
