The beginning of Peter's fast (20/06)

Petrov and Pavlov (Apostolic) were formerly called the fast of Pentecost. The church establishment of this fast is mentioned in the apostolic decrees: «After Pentecost, celebrate one week and then fast; justice requires both to rejoice in accepting gifts from God and to fast after lightening the flesh».

Fasting begins on Monday, exactly one week after the Holy Spirit Day following Trinity. In other words, on the 57th day after Easter. Peter's Fast was established in memory of the supreme apostles Peter and Paul, who fasted, preparing themselves for the Gospel sermon.

The duration of Peter's fast depends on the day of Easter celebration: the longest fast can last six weeks, and the shortest — eight days.

Peter's fast always ends on the Day of the Apostles Peter and Paul on July 12, unless the feast of the holy apostles Peter and Paul is on Wednesday or Friday.

The cuisine of Peter's Fast is considered non-strict — food of animal origin is excluded from the diet; only plant products and fish are allowed to be used as food. Moreover, on Wednesday and Friday it is not recommended to consume fish and vegetable oil; on other days fish is allowed.

When fasting, you need to be attentive to your diet and avoid restrictions that negatively affect your health. The point of fasting is not to deprive the body of essential nutrients. It is important not to indulge in gluttony and refrain from temptations. The body must receive everything it needs for full functioning.

Properly organized nutrition during fasting will help both the soul and body.
