Day of the Armenian Intelligence Forces (05/11)

Reconnaissance Troops Day is celebrated in Armenia annually on November 5th.

The formation of its own intelligence unit of the Armenian Armed Forces began in September 1991 after Armenia gained independence. Until this point, as in other Soviet republics, intelligence issues were dealt with here by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the USSR and its structural units. On November 5, 1992, the formation was completed, and subsequently this date became Intelligence Troops Day for Armenia.

Among the numerous tasks of intelligence specialists — are obtaining information about the enemy and identifying enemy groups; collecting information, destroying or disabling important enemy targets; providing assistance in organizing resistance behind enemy lines; identifying signs of enemy preparation for the use of weapons of mass destruction and precision weapons.

The Armenian leadership, senior military leaders and intelligence officers themselves highly appreciate the level of training of the reconnaissance troops, which is constantly being improved. Military experts believe that the reconnaissance troops have historically been one of the strongest components of the Armenian Armed Forces. After all, this branch of the military is distinguished by combat and physical training, high professionalism and patriotic spirit, and the ability to quickly make decisions in difficult conditions. In addition, these units are equipped with new technical equipment and weapons.

On Intelligence Troops Day, ceremonies are traditionally held to award soldiers with departmental certificates, medals and badges. Today, all intelligence officers in the country, as well as all veterans of the intelligence forces, are congratulated and honored.

One of the outstanding Armenian intelligence officers can be called the Soviet intelligence officer of the foreign intelligence service of the USSR State Security Committee, Hero of the Soviet Union Gevork Andreevich Vartanyan. According to authoritative experts, he is one of the hundred great intelligence officers in the world.
