Knowledge Day in Azerbaijan (15/09)

Unlike many countries — former republics of the Soviet Union — in Azerbaijani schools, the new school year begins on September 15, not September 1. And this day is an important holiday for the whole country — Knowledge Day.

It was established by Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev dated August 21, 2004. This document also spoke about the transition of secondary schools to a five-day working week and that classes in all educational institutions of the Republic of Azerbaijan begin on Knowledge Day — on September 15.

All this was done « in order to improve the existing operating hours in educational institutions of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in connection with the creation of an effective system of activities that serves to improve the quality of education in these educational institutions». The education system in the country includes preschool education, general (secondary) education, vocational (specialized secondary and higher) education, postgraduate training, master's and doctoral studies.

Azerbaijani children begin their studies at school at the age of six. In addition to general education, foreign languages are widely taught in schools in the Republic, as well as languages of national minorities.

On the holiday itself, in honor of the beginning of the school year, numerous ceremonial and festive events dedicated to the Day of Knowledge are held.

Let us remind you that Knowledge Day in Russia and most CIS countries traditionally takes place on September 1.
