Sweets Day in the USA (15/10)

Every year on the third Saturday of October, the United States celebrates Sweets Day or Sweet Day. Sweetest Day — literally translated — « Sweetest day»).

This tradition began in Cleveland in 1921, when Herbert Birch Kingston, a philanthropist and confectionery factory worker, decided to help disadvantaged orphans, the poor and all those experiencing bad times.

Kingston gathered a small group of city residents, and with the help of friends, they organized the distribution of small gifts to somehow support the hungry, those whom the government had forgotten about a long time ago.

During the first Sweets Day, movie star Ann Pennington gave 2,200 Cleveland boy newspaper carriers sweet gifts in gratitude for their work.

Another major movie star, Theda Bara, gave 10,000 boxes of candy to Cleveland hospital patients and all those who came to watch her film at a local movie theater.

Initially, Sweets Day was celebrated primarily in the central and western regions of the United States — in the states of Illinois, Michigan and Ohio. In recent years, the popularity of the holiday has increased noticeably, and now the geography of the celebration covers other parts of the country.
