Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Ereda Tragedy in South Ossetia (18/03)

On March 18, South Ossetia celebrates the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Ereda Tragedy. Meetings and mourning events dedicated to this date are being held in the republic.

During the Georgian aggression, many military and civil crimes were committed. One such crime by the Georgian government against the Ossetian people was committed on March 18, 1991, when Georgian armed forces seized a truck with civilians of Ossetian nationality heading to their villages. After brutal torture and abuse, 12 people were buried alive in one grave, which became a mass grave for them, in the village of Ered.

It became possible to discover the burial site and identify the dead only two years later, in 1993. Commemorative events are also held here on this day.
