Day of the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Moldova (29/01)

On January 29, 1992, Law № 902-XII «On the Prosecutor's Office» was adopted in Moldova, the date of adoption of the Law became the official Day of the Prosecutor's Office Worker, which was established by Decree of the President of the country № 11-a of January 26, 1996.

Article 1 of this Law states that «In accordance with the Constitution, the Prosecutor General and his subordinate prosecutors supervise the precise and uniform implementation of laws by public administration bodies, legal entities and individuals and their associations». And also that the «Prosecutor's Office protects the rule of law, the rights and freedoms of citizens, and promotes the administration of justice in accordance with the law».

The Public Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Moldova is authorized to: —, on behalf and in the interests of society, ensure the implementation of the law, protect law and order, the rights and freedoms of citizens in cases where violation of them entails the application of criminal sanctions; — lead and carry out criminal prosecution; — represent the prosecution in the courts; — participate, in accordance with the law, in the consideration of civil cases (including cases of administrative proceedings) and cases of offenses for which proceedings have been initiated by the Prosecutor's Office; — provide legal assistance and international cooperation in the field of its activities; — implement the criminal policy of the state; — ensure effective protection of witnesses, victims and other participants in the process; — in cases provided for by law to bring civil claims; — monitor compliance with laws in places of pre-trial detention and penitentiary institutions; — monitor the execution of court decisions in criminal cases and more.

Over the many years of its existence, the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Moldova has proven in practice that it is one of the main state attributes in the implementation of the principle of the rule of law and the protection of the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens.

Only high professionalism and the efforts made by employees of the prosecutor's office to supervise the implementation of the Constitution and state laws, and other documents regulating the socio-economic life of the country can minimize the level of corruption and other vices of society.
