The beginning of the solar New Year in India (14/04)

This day marks the beginning of the Hindu solar new year — Rongali Bihu. Hindus believe that several thousand years ago on this day the goddess Ganga descended to earth, so on the eve of — on April 13 —, many of them gather together off the banks of the sacred Ganges River for ritual bathing.

The main festivities are concentrated in holy places along the Ganges in northern India, in the Magal Gardens of Sringar, in Tamil Nadu and in many Hindu temples.

The holiday takes place on the first day of the Tamil month of Chithirai, which falls on April 14.

Hindus decorate their homes with flowers and hang flags decorated with embroidery with religious subjects and images of gods. Children put on garlands of multi-colored flowers and run through the streets wishing them good luck in the New Year. In many places, the holiday is accompanied by fireworks and various performances.

On this spring day, it is good to please yourself and your loved ones with Indian cuisine.
