Independence Day of the Republic of Uzbekistan (01/09)

Every year on September 1, Uzbekistan celebrates an important public holiday — Independence Day of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzb). O'zbekiston Respublikasi Mustaqilligi kuni).

On August 31, 1991, the Extraordinary 7th session of the Supreme Council of the Republic was held in Tashkent, at which the state independence of Uzbekistan was proclaimed. The Statement of the Supreme Council on the state independence of the Republic was adopted, and the corresponding resolution approved September 1 as Independence Day.

Subsequently, the Law on the Fundamentals of State Independence of the Republic was adopted. Formally, Uzbekistan gained independence with the collapse of the Soviet Union in December 1991.

On November 18, 1991, at the 8th session of the Supreme Council, the State Flag of the Republic of Uzbekistan was approved, and on December 15, the Constitution was published, which was adopted a year later on December 8, 1992 at the 11th session of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The President of Uzbekistan then said: «We decided to be independent. There are many difficulties, trials, and merciless struggles ahead. But there is no turning back. We will never deviate from our chosen path. We must win. And for this we need to unite all — from young to old — citizens of the free Republic of Uzbekistan».

Celebrations dedicated to Independence Day are taking place throughout the country. Top officials of the state also take part in them.
