Police Day in the Republic of Moldova (18/12)

Every year on December 18, police officers and veterans of the Republic of Moldova celebrate the professional holiday — Police Day.

On December 18, 1990, Moldova adopted Law № 416-XII «On the Police», which « determines the place, role and principles of police activity in the system of central and local public administration bodies, establishes the main tasks of the police, duties and rights, responsibilities and procedures supervision of its activities».

The Moldovan Police is part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic and is an armed law enforcement agency created to protect the life, health, rights and freedoms of the country's citizens. The area of police activity also includes protecting the interests of society and the state from illegal, criminal and other attacks.

The tasks of the police are clearly defined by the above law. It: (1) Protection of the life, health, honour, dignity, rights, freedoms, interests and property of citizens against criminal and other unlawful attacks; (2) Prevention and suppression of crimes and other offences; (3) Detection and detection of crimes, search for the perpetrators; (4) Maintaining public order and ensuring public safety; (5) Providing, under the conditions and in the manner established by this law, assistance to citizens, public administration bodies, as well as enterprises, institutions and organizations in protecting their rights and implementing the duties assigned to them by law; (6) Implementation of State protection measures in respect of persons assisting criminal proceedings, in accordance with the legislation in force.

The Moldovan police took an active part in the events of recent history that took place in the Republic after the declaration of independence on August 27, 1991 — in 1992 during a period of tense political situation in the Transnistrian zone, which escalated into an armed conflict; in April 2009, when anti-government riots occurred in Chisinau, resolved by the police.

On May 10, 2006, by Decree of the Government of the Republic of Moldova № 481 «On approval of the Code of Ethics and Deontology of Police», a document was approved defining the role and place of the police in society, as well as being a manual stipulating the framework of behavior of law enforcement officers in normal and emergency situations.

On their professional holiday, they deservedly receive congratulations for their dangerous and responsible work.
