In June 2008, the Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church decided to perform a special festive service on this day, and also appealed to the leaders of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus with a proposal to include this day among state memorable dates.
For the first time, the new holiday in Ukraine was celebrated on July 28, 2007, unofficially. But already in 2008, a Presidential Decree was issued on the establishment of the state holiday «Day of the Baptism of Kievan Rus — Ukraine». This year, the celebrations turned out to be especially large-scale in connection with the anniversary of the — 1020th anniversary of the baptism of Rus.
