«We choose a future without radiation!» — under this motto, every year on November 9, the world celebrates International Anti-Nuclear Action Day.
Environmentalists and other concerned citizens organize pickets, demonstrations and protests on this day in different cities of the world against the development of nuclear energy and for increasing its safety. They also organize anti-nuclear camps near dangerous facilities and install signs informing citizens about the danger in places with high radioactive backgrounds.
Residents of Russia joined anti-nuclear actions among the first — back in the 1990s. This topic became especially acute in connection with the decision of the Ministry of Atomic Energy of the Russian Federation to import spent nuclear fuel from other countries for processing, storage and disposal, as a result of which the volume of radioactive materials in Russia will grow rapidly.
For information: spent nuclear fuel is considered the most dangerous waste from the nuclear industry and poses a real threat to the life and health of everyone living in close proximity to its burial sites.
The response to this decision was the intensification of the movement of environmentalists speaking under the slogan: «We will not allow Russia to be turned into an international nuclear dump!».
Opponents of this idea — environmentalists and concerned citizens — rightly believe that money can be earned in more efficient and safer ways.
The second issue of concern to supporters of anti-nuclear movements is — nuclear power plants, the operation of which is far from safe. The risk of radiation accidents and disasters cannot be ruled out, environmentalists say. Confirmation of their words — major accidents, incidents and incidents that regularly occur at nuclear power plants around the world. According to experts, the costs of decommissioning a nuclear power plant exceed construction costs by 10 times, and there are still no savings funds for this.
Today there are other dates in the world dedicated to the anti-nuclear theme, including — Mobilization Day against the Threat of Nuclear War (January 29) and International Day against Nuclear Tests (August 29).
