November 21 is the Day of the Armed Forces of Greece –, a country whose history has provided examples of outstanding military exploits of antiquity, and also made a significant contribution to the development of military science in the Ancient World.
The history of the modern armed forces of Greece dates back to the first half of the 19th century, when, as a result of the national liberation war, subsequently supported by European powers and the Russian Empire, Greece gained independence.
During the First World War, Greece joined the Entente in 1917, and during the Second World War, finding itself occupied by Nazi German troops, Greece continued to resist the actions of partisan detachments, many of which were formed from members of the Greek army. The same Greeks who managed to get out of the occupied country formed the Greek armed forces as part of the contingent of troops of the anti-Hitler coalition and continued the fight in North Africa and Italy.
Since 1952, Greece has been part of the NATO bloc. Today, the recruitment of the Greek armed forces, including the Ground Forces, Navy and Air Force, is carried out on the principle of universal conscription. The period of compulsory service is 1 year, regardless of the type of troops.
Traditionally, on November 21, along with the Christian holiday of the Entry of the Blessed Virgin Mary into the Temple, celebrated according to the Gregorian calendar, the Greeks also honor military personnel of their armed forces. This tradition has existed in Greece since 1975. And this is due to the recognition of the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the Greek army.
After the solemn liturgies in churches dedicated to one of the most revered Orthodox holidays, events dedicated to the celebration of Armed Forces Day are held throughout the country, during which the President of the country addresses military personnel and the nation, expressing gratitude to the Greek armed forces, emphasizing their important role in the history of the state and gaining independence.
Festive events invariably include the laying of wreaths at war memorials, at the monument to the Unknown Soldier. Musical works performed by military bands can be heard in city squares. The celebration of Greek Armed Forces Day begins with the ceremonial raising of the national flag on the Acropolis rock, and ends with its ceremonial descent in the evening of the same day.
