Neurologist Day (01/12)

December 1 is Neurologist Day – is celebrated by unofficial professional doctors, specialists, scientists whose work is aimed at preventing and treating diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system of humans.

Neurology occupies a special place among medical specialties, and this is due to the fact that the human nervous system is involved in all processes of life. It is no secret that a whole range of human diseases can be caused by neurological reasons. Disturbances in the functioning of the central and peripheral nervous system can lead to malfunctions of many organs and impaired physical functions. Diagnosis, detection and treatment of such disorders becomes the main concern of neurologists (or neurologists).

Often the functions of neurologists are confused with the functions of doctors involved in the prevention and treatment of mental disorders (psychiatrists). The functions and tasks of these specialists are different. However, the connection of neurological disorders with all systems of the human body can cause the neurologist and psychiatrist to work together.

The history of neurology originates in the works of ancient scientists. Gradually, from describing the symptoms of neurological diseases, ancient researchers begin to move on to describing methods for their diagnosis and treatment. Among the names of such scientists, Hippocrates and Ibn Sina are invariably named.

The intensive development of neurology occurred in the 19th century. It was then that the study of nerve cells and fibers, as well as the principles of nerve impulses, began. Descriptions of the conduction pathways of the brain and spinal cord have been made. In 1860, the first neurological department opened near Paris, headed by Jean-Martin Charcot. In the next decade, a whole course of lectures and a book about nervous disorders and diseases will emerge from his pen.

The development of Russian neurology is associated with the names of such scientists and doctors as A.Ya. Kozhevnikov, I.P. Pavlov, V.K. Roth, S.S. Korsakov, G.I. Rossolimo, V.M. Bekhterev et al. For example, Kozhevnikov is considered the founder of the Russian school of neurology. Thanks to him, the world's first neurological clinic appeared in Russia, the Moscow Society of Neuropathologists and Psychiatrists was created, and the «Journal of Neuropathology and Psychiatry» began to be published. Kozhevnikov became the author of Russia's first textbook for students on neurological diseases and psychiatry.

The development of neurology continues into modern times. New medicines, treatment methods, new diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment are appearing, and most importantly, the study of the human nervous system itself continues.

Together with neurologists (neurologists) working in clinics and hospitals, the holiday is celebrated by medical scientists, as well as teachers of medical educational institutions working and teaching in the specialty of neurology.

In individual clinics, hospital departments and universities, where the celebration of Neurologist Day is becoming a stable tradition, ceremonial events, awards for employees, as well as scientific symposia, seminars for exchanging experiences and getting acquainted with new medical achievements in the field of neurology are timed to coincide with this day. These events certainly discuss the problem of significant rejuvenation of neurological disorders and diseases. This is associated with a change in the rhythm of life (especially in cities), deterioration of the environmental situation, disruption of diet and other factors.

Speaking about prevention, neurologists recommend taking care of your nervous system, taking care of it, trying to lead a healthy lifestyle, give up bad habits, be outdoors more often, hike, eat a wide variety of healthy foods, exercise and moderate physical activity. Neurologists, like other doctors, remind that preventing the disease is easier and more correct than treating it.
