Day of liberation from fascism in Italy (25/04)

Day of Liberation from Fascism and German Occupation (Festa della Liberazione) during the Second World War — is a national holiday in Italy.

On April 25, 1945, fascist dictator Benito Mussolini fled Milan, and a new era began in the country's history — movement of armed resistance and struggle for democracy.

In April 1945, a general strike and armed uprising began in German-occupied Northern Italy. Partisans and rebels in bloody battles liberated hundreds of cities in Northern and Central Italy even before the arrival of Allied troops.

In addition, this general armed uprising played a huge role in saving the industrial potential of Northern Italy from destruction by the retreating Nazi troops and created the preconditions for the further consolidation of the country's democratic forces.

Date April 25 — day of the start of the general liberation uprising — was declared a national holiday in Italy. And today on this day, commemorative events are held in many cities of the country.

In Rome, in the park at Villa «Torlonia», which served as the residence of Benito Mussolini for 18 years, there is an Italian Holocaust Museum. The Holocaust Remembrance Foundation, led by director Steven Spielberg, contributed to the memorial.
