International Delegate Day (25/04)

On April 2, 2019, by its Resolution (A/RES/73/286), the UN General Assembly approved a new commemorative date – International Delegate's Day. All countries are recommended to celebrate it annually on April 25 in memory of the event that occurred on this day in 1945.

On that historic day, when explosions were still roaring, shells were exploding and soldiers from the countries of the anti-Hitler coalition were dying in the name of peace and freedom, completing the defeat of Hitler’s troops, when there were still more than 4 months before the end of World War II, an international conference opened in San Francisco, in which representatives of more than 50 countries took part.

This conference was convened with the aim of developing principles for preventing wars, finding solutions to restore peace through joint efforts and building dialogue between states and nations. The main result of the conference in San Francisco was the establishment of the United Nations and the development of its Charter. This document was signed on May 26, 1945, and on October 24 of the same year, the UN Charter came into force. Now this date is UN Day.

The memorial date was first celebrated on April 25, 2020, the 75th anniversary of the opening of the conference in San Francisco. The title of the memorable date is intended to emphasize the important role of delegates of UN representative countries in resolving global issues of the modern world: maintaining security and preventing wars and armed conflicts, their peaceful resolution in the event of escalation, resolving issues of environmental security, humanitarian nature, overcoming the consequences of economic and social crises and problems, contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals.

The most important component of the work of delegates is solving these problems through multilateral diplomacy. To do this, they participate in meetings of the UN General Assembly, the Security Council and other senior bodies of the United Nations.

Etymologically, the word «delegate» comes from the Latin word «delegatus» – sent. Essentially, the delegate is an elected or appointed representative of any state, party, group, society, organization, etc., entitled to represent the delegating party at any meeting, conference, etc.

Exhibitions in museums, photo exhibitions, conferences and seminars at universities are timed to coincide with the celebration of International Delegate Day, at which they will certainly talk about the memorable events of April 25, 1945, when work actually began on the formation of the principles of international security and development in the post-war world, and also the role of delegates from UN member countries in this process was determined.
