Swedish National Day — Swedish Flag Day (06/06)

Swedish National Day or Swedish Flag Day (Swedish). Sveriges nationaldag or Svenska flaggans dag) — is a public holiday celebrated annually on June 6th. It has been officially celebrated in the country since 1983, when it was established by the Riksdag (Swedish Parliament).

The holiday is associated with two historical dates: on June 6, 1523, Gustav Erikson, who led the anti-Danish popular uprising in 1521, was elected king of Sweden under the name Gustav I Vasa. And almost three centuries later, on June 6, 1809, a new Swedish Constitution was adopted, which was in force until January 1, 1975.

Since 1916, June 6 was celebrated as Swedish Flag Day, and in 1983 it became Swedish National Day. By the way, the exact age of the Swedish flag is unknown, but experts date the oldest images of a blue cloth with a yellow cross to the 16th century.

In accordance with a royal decree of 1569, the yellow cross was to be always depicted on Swedish battle standards and banners, as the coat of arms of Sweden was a blue shield divided into four parts by a gold cross. The colors and design of the flag are described in the «Flag Act of 1982.

On the holiday itself, many solemn and cultural events, mass celebrations and concerts take place throughout the country.
