World Suicide Prevention Day (10/09)

Every year since 2003, on September 10, the World Health Organization (WHO), with the support of the International Association for Suicide Prevention and under the patronage of the UN, has held World Suicide Prevention Day to raise awareness around the world that suicide is preventable.

Modern rhythms of life and work, as well as, apparently, many subjective factors, lead to the fact that at a certain moment a person decides to commit a crime — a crime against his life. According to statistics, on average, half of the world's violent deaths are due to suicide.

Suicide — is a global and tragic problem for global health. According to statistics, as many people die as a result of suicide in the world as as a result of wars and violent murders combined.

According to WHO, there are currently more than 700,000 suicides worldwide every year, with one person dying by suicide every 40 seconds. Developed countries lead in the prevalence of suicide cases. The championship belongs to the countries of Eastern Europe. The lowest — indicators are in Latin America and Islamic countries. For Africa, statistics are virtually non-existent. In Russia recently, unfortunately, cases of suicide have also become more frequent, especially among teenagers, which is the most scary...

The main causes of suicide are poverty, unemployment, fear of punishment, mental illness, domestic grief, passions, satiety and serious illness.

According to experts, no single factor can fully explain why a person committed suicide: suicidal behavior is a complex phenomenon determined by a whole complex of interacting factors — personal, social, psychological, cultural, biological and environmental.

Therefore, the International Association for Suicide Prevention, in collaboration with WHO, calls on the public and authorities to hold events and actions on this day to strengthen the sense of responsibility for saving the lives of people who may be lost as a result of suicide.

Moreover, WHO and other partners advocate not only suicide prevention, but also in defense of appropriate treatment and subsequent care for people who attempted suicide, as well as more balanced coverage of suicides in the media. There is a need to raise public awareness at the global level that suicide is a leading preventable cause of premature death.

The public and national governments, in turn, need to develop policy frameworks for national suicide prevention strategies, which at the local level in each specific region should be implemented in the form of programs and measures to prevent suicide and suicidal tendencies among the population.
