Day of Solidarity of World Azerbaijanis (31/12)

Every year on December 31, everyone in Azerbaijan is busy not only with pre-New Year chores, but also celebrates the Day of National Solidarity of Azerbaijanis (Azerbaijani). Dünya azərbaycanlılarının həmrəyliyi günü), living in all countries of the world. This holiday is celebrated not only in Azerbaijan, but also in other states where Azerbaijani diasporas exist.

This day was first declared on December 16, 1991 by the national leader of the Azerbaijani people, Heydar Aliyev, when he was still the chairman of the Supreme Mazhilis of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic, after which this date, in 1993, became a national holiday of the entire Azerbaijani people.

The event that served as the reason for declaring the holiday occurred on December 31, 1989, when the first ever World Congress of Azerbaijanis opened in Istanbul. And with the formation of the independent Republic of Azerbaijan, the social status of the diaspora changed, it intensified its diverse activities for the benefit of the Azerbaijani people.

Several tens of millions of Azerbaijanis live in the world, and not only in their homeland, but also in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Turkey, CIS countries, Germany, France, Great Britain, Scandinavian countries, the USA and the Middle East. One of the largest Azerbaijani diasporas lives in Russia.

The main idea of the Day of National Solidarity of World Azerbaijanis, as noted by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev in his address to his compatriots, is the «unity and solidarity of the world's Azerbaijanis, the statehood of Azerbaijan, respect for the national and spiritual values of our people, feelings and ideas related to belonging to the Azerbaijani people, attachment to the historical homeland».
