United Nations Day, which is celebrated annually on October 24, was proclaimed in October 1947 by a resolution of the UN General Assembly (№ 168) and coincides with the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945.
In 1971, the General Assembly, in its resolution (№ 2782), which emphasized that United Nations Day should become an international holiday, recommended that Member States celebrate it as a public holiday.
UN – is an international organization of states created to maintain and strengthen international peace, security, and develop cooperation between countries.
One of the first UN documents was the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in December 1948.
Currently, the UN includes 193 states, each also a member of the UN General Assembly. The principal organs of the United Nations are: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice and the United Nations Secretariat. The UN also has a number of its own specialized agencies – international intergovernmental organizations on economic, social and humanitarian issues (UNESCO, WHO, FAO, ILO, WTO, IAEA and others).

United Nations Day is part of United Nations Week, held from 20 to 26 October.
The Day's festive events include meetings, meetings, discussion «round tables», exhibitions. Traditionally, on United Nations Day, the UN Secretary-General addresses the world community with a message, and an international concert is held in the General Assembly Hall. Sometimes special events are held in which members of the United Nations communicate with different cities around the world through electronic means of communication and conduct teleconferences.
At the initiative of the UN, World Development Information Day is also being held on October 24.
