Jaya Ekadashi (Bhaimi Ekadashi) (12/02)

The holiday of Jaya Ekadashi or Bhaimi Ekadashi carries the idea of love ministry (bhakti), completely opposite to the idea of sexual satisfaction (kama). Very often, Krishna, whose name translates as the Source of Eternal Delight, which is the personification of Pure Love, is confused with the deity of lust and passion, which, according to the Amara-kosha dictionary, has five names: Kandarpa — « deity of love», Darpaka — « event-preventing», Ananga — « does not have a physical body», Kama — « personified passion», Pancha-sharaikh — « holds five arrows (taste, touch, sound, sound, smell and image)».

The rules and limitations of Jaya Ekadashi exist to engage a person in pure activities that can please Krishna. And this is awareness of the eternity of spiritual bliss and the temporality of material pleasures, the ability to see meaning and value in serving all living things (people, animals, plants), the forces of nature (demigods) and the Almighty (Vishnu, Krishna).

In addition to the fact that Jaya Ekadashi destroys all the consequences of sins and lightens the heavy burden of material existence, this ancient holiday is the «mother of love devotion».

The Padma Purana describes a historical episode relating to Jaya Ekadashi. A long time ago, on the celestial planets, King Indra enjoyed the company of celestial courtesans who danced for his pleasure, and singers who sang incomparably in sweet voices. Chief musician Indra's son named Malyavan was greatly liked by a celestial courtesan named Pushpavati. Her beautiful body, figure and enchanting eyebrow movements captivated Malyavan. Because of the love that pierced their hearts with passion, they could not sing and dance correctly in front of the lord of paradise.

Insulted by the dissonance in the music, the bishop became very angry and cursed them. Due to the cruel curse of Indra, Malyavan and Pushpavati immediately fell on the peak of the Himalayas of planet Earth. Their heavenly mind has shrunk much, they have lost their senses of taste, smell and even touch. In the snow and ice desert of the high Himalayas it was so cold and bad that they could not even enjoy the oblivion of sleep. However, to their great luck, this happened on the day of Jaya Ekadashi.

By the will of circumstances, they unconsciously spent the whole day without water or food, and at night, due to the cold, they could not enjoy sleep or physical intimacy. So, because of Indra's powerful curse, they suffered all night. The next day, a celestial flying ship (vimana) brought them to Amaravati, the table city of Indra, who was surprised to see how quickly they returned to their original state and appearance after the curse was placed on them to suffer in exile from the celestial kingdom.

Malyavan replied: «O lord, by the grace of God, and also thanks to the powerful influence of Jaya Ekadashi, we were freed from suffering: since we performed devotional service to Lord Vishnu, observing Jaya Ekadashi, His dearest day, we happily returned to our former position».
