Folk festival «Opernplatzfest» in Frankfurt am Main (22/06)

Every year in May or June, large-scale folk festivities begin on the Operna Square in Frankfurt am Main, which last just over a week. Festival «Opernplatzfest» (Opernplatzfest) – is one of the main social events of this German city. It is sometimes called an open-air ball.

The Old Opera House or Opera House was built in 1872–1880 in the Italian Renaissance style. During the Second World War, British aircraft destroyed the structure, turning it into ruins. However, after the war, on the initiative of the townspeople, the Old Opera was restored, and the square in front of it became a favorite vacation spot for Frankfurt residents.

The first festival was held here in 1978 and has been held every year since. Traditionally, in June, numerous kiosks open on the square, offering residents and guests of the city delicacies from all over the earth. Snow-white pavilions are installed in front of the Old Opera, where you can treat yourself to champagne.

Around the fountain in the square there are numbers of the festive cultural program. Typically, it includes performances by popular artists. Another spectacle can be enjoyed outside the official stage: during the festival, the entire color of Frankfurt gathers on Opera Square – famous politicians, businessmen, and cultural figures. They, as a rule, also become the object of attention of curious citizens and tourists.
