World Public Knitting Day (11/06)

On one of the Saturdays of June, starting in 2005, the world celebrates an unusual holiday — World Public Knitting Day ( World Wide Knit in Public Day ).

It also passes unusually, but quite in accordance with its name: everyone who likes to knit their knitting needles or hooks gather in some public place of the city — in the park, in the square, in the cafe — and indulge in their favorite pastime.

For the first time, World Public Knitting Day was held in Paris. I came up with this fun, which has become a tradition, a knitting lover Daniel Lendez. Over time, not only French women became involved in public knitting, but also residents of other countries ( the holiday is held, for example, in the USA, England, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Estonia ), and the action has its own emblem, which depicts two knitting needles against the background of a map of Europe.

Today, activists from more than 50 countries of the world participate in the events of the Day. Such events are designed to show the general public that knitting can be a social activity, and that everyone can do it, regardless of gender, age and origin.

By the way, in many places the action has become charitable. Often, needlewomen transfer all things connected on this day to funds for poor citizens or put them at fairs, and all the collected funds are sent, again, to help those in need.

In addition, as part of World Knitting Day, public exhibitions of knitted products, fashion shows, master classes for those who want to learn this difficult but exciting activity are organized. Knitting factories and workshops, shops selling yarn and goods for needlework, and other specialized institutions conduct their events.

Today, according to various sources, World Knitting Day is taking place in more than 350 cities on the planet.
