World Engineering Day is celebrated annually on March 4, starting in 2020. This professional holiday of engineers, scientists and inventors was established on the initiative of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and established by a resolution of the UNESCO General Conference, which was held in November 2019 in Paris.
Establishment of a new international date – is a tribute from the world community to the work of specialists in this field and recognition of the contribution they make to the sustainable development of humanity, improving people's lives and improving the quality of life of the population.
The date of the holiday – March 4 – is timed to coincide with the day of the formation of WFEO in 1968, which today unites national organizations of engineers from 103 countries (which is approximately 30 million specialists). The Russian Union of Scientific and Engineering Public Associations is also a member of the federation. The main goal of WFEO, operating under the auspices of UNESCO, was and remains progress and improvement of public welfare, development of scientific, educational and engineering activities in each specific country and the world as a whole.
It is no secret that – engineers are the main creators of technical civilization on Earth: it was they who collected and systematized the knowledge accumulated by humanity and created new technologies, structures and machines on their basis. At all times, the goals of engineering have been the invention, development, creation, implementation and improvement of technology, materials or processes.
In addition to household ones, engineers also solve global – problems from providing access to clean water and reliable energy supply to introducing digital technologies into all spheres of human life. At the same time, engineering is closely intertwined with science and, based on the postulates of fundamental science and the results of applied research, is a branch of scientific and technical activity.
Therefore, Engineering Day – is a holiday of technical thought and action, a holiday of everyone who ensures the confident development of scientific and technological progress on the planet. The contribution of engineers to the strategic potential of each country can hardly be overestimated, because their discoveries make it possible to achieve high goals of technological progress and change our lives for the better.
As part of the celebration of the world date, it has already become a tradition to hold awareness-raising and thematic events in scientific and educational institutions, where all engineers, designers, and scientists engaged in scientific research in the field of improving technology and technical processes are honored.
