History shows that once upon a time the city of Chiang Mai was called the «rose of the North. It was believed to be the most beautiful city in northern Thailand.
Local residents knew a lot about the beauty of —; they devoted most of their lives to growing flowers. This tradition has survived to this day. And once a year, modern gardeners demonstrate their talents at the Flower Festival.
Residents of the city are proud that they have a unique event every year, not only for Thailand, but for the whole world. Much will become clear if the very name of the city is translated into Russian, that is, the word «Chiang Mai» — it means « many colors». There really are a lot of flowers here, and it is in February that flowering time begins.
Once a year, provincial Chiang Mai is transformed. Men and children, women, and musicians march through the streets. Colorful noisy processions spread throughout the city. Crowds of tourists are eager to take part in these unusual processions.
Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of a variety of colors are carried around the city. The most beautiful girls sew exotic national costumes for this event —, because at the end of the festival the most beautiful of them will be chosen. Beauty will become the queen of flowers.
All flower festival events begin early in the morning and end late in the evening. The festival is full of a variety of exciting events: opening ceremony, processions, exhibitions and competitions of flower decorators, fairs, performances, election of a beauty queen. It’s probably unnecessary to say that besides holidays, all Thais, and especially Chiang Mai, love flowers very much.
Intricate plants accompany them almost all their lives. Birth, death, wedding, holidays and weekends, guests — all this is accompanied by lush bouquets of flowers. The spring flower show is probably the biggest expression of this love. And here it has always been like this. It’s not for nothing that more than seven hundred years ago the founders of the city called it Chiang Mai.
