On the first Sunday of October in Latvia, all teachers celebrate their professional holiday.
On November 23, 2006, the Seimas, by a majority vote in the second reading, adopted the amendment «Center of Harmony» to the law «On holidays, memorable and celebrated days», according to which the proposal to celebrate Teacher's Day (Skolotāju diena) was supported.
«Concord Center» is convinced that teachers have earned the right to their professional holiday, which today is accompanied by various special events.
Basic education is compulsory in Latvia; the program is designed for 9 years. The goal of basic education — is to give a person the skills and abilities necessary in life. Typically, this program is run by a basic school (pamatskola). The educational programs of the first four grades can be implemented by a primary school (sakumskola) or a secondary school (viduskola).
In secondary education, there are two types of programs: general secondary (its task is — to prepare for further studies) and professional secondary educational program (focused on obtaining professional qualifications). Higher education can be obtained in college or higher education (university).
