Every year on November 19, the Day of Hydrometeorological Service Workers of Ukraine is celebrated (Ukrainian). Day of Practitioners of the Hydrometeorological Service), established by Decree of the President of the country №208/2003 of March 11, 2003.
The State Hydrometeorological Service, which operates within the system of the State Service of Ukraine for Emergency Situations, plays a key role in obtaining data on current and expected hydrometeorological conditions. Also, Hydrometeorological Service employees collect and process data on the modern climate, its possible fluctuations and changes in the future, forecasting and preventing natural hydrometeorological phenomena.
The Meteorological Service of the Republic was founded in 1921, and in 1929 it was merged with the hydrological service, becoming the Hydrometeorological Committee, which in 1940 was renamed the Directorate of the Hydrometeorological Service of the USSR. In the 1990s, already in independent Ukraine, the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center became the main meteorological organization. And Ukraine itself is a member of the World Meteorological Organization — of the specialized intergovernmental agency of the UN in the field of meteorology.
The daily round-the-clock work of meteorologists, hydrologists, and weather forecasters makes it possible to take measures in advance to prevent possible losses from dangerous weather phenomena.
The Hydrometeorological Service of Ukraine has more than a thousand observation points for the state of the atmosphere and water bodies.
Every year, the country's hydrometeorological service organizations provide thousands of forecasts, operational information, special reports, bulletins and warnings about dangerous and natural hydrometeorological phenomena.
It is the high qualifications, energy and love for their work of more than 4 thousand workers at all levels that allows the state hydrometeorological service to properly carry out its tasks.
