Professional holiday — Bar Day (Ukrainian. Bar Day), which is celebrated annually in Ukraine on December 19, is established by Decree of the President of the country № 1121/2002 of December 2, 2002.
According to the Law of Ukraine «On the Bar», which was put into effect by a resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of December 19, 1992 (that’s why this day was chosen as the date of the holiday), the Bar of Ukraine « is a voluntary professional public association designed, according to the Constitution of Ukraine, to promote the protection of rights, freedoms and represent the legitimate interests of citizens of Ukraine, foreign citizens, stateless persons, legal entities, provide them with other legal assistance».
Lawyer — is a defense attorney who is vested with broad rights in criminal proceedings. Among the fundamental rights of a lawyer — is the right to visit the accused without limiting quantities; familiarization with the case materials; presenting evidence of the innocence or lesser guilt of the accused; appealing the actions of the investigator, prosecutor or court and others.
The lawyer is obliged to maintain attorney-client privilege. At the same time, a lawyer should not defend any interest of his client, but only the legitimate one. The means and methods of protection must, of course, be legal and moral.
The purpose of establishing the holiday is to recognize the great social significance of this human rights institution in Ukraine. After all, how effective the activities of the legal profession are serves as a clear indicator of the level of democracy in the state, as well as its political and economic stability.
