Every year on the third Saturday of April, since 1999, Environment Day is celebrated in Ukraine (Ukrainian). Dovkill Day), established by the relevant Decree of the President of Ukraine № 855/98 of August 6, 1998.
This holiday began with the All-Ukrainian action «Tree-Life» (Ukrainian). «Tree-Zhitty»), which was held in 1997-1998 on the third Sunday of April, according to Decree of the President of Ukraine N 178/97-rp of April 15, 1997, and consisted of involving the population of the state in the improvement and landscaping of territories.
Therefore, Environment Day was established in support of the initiative of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Nuclear Safety of Ukraine and public environmental organizations, with the aim of developing the activities begun by the All-Ukrainian action «Tree-Life« and other public initiatives».
Traditionally, various environmental events have been held in the country for this Day, with extensive media coverage, including:
— planting new forest plantations, planting trees and shrubs;
— streamlining the territories of parks, squares, alleys;
— layout and creation of new lawns and flower beds;
— eliminating unauthorized landfills and improving the sanitary condition of landfills;
— general garbage collection on the banks of rivers, lakes, ponds;
— clearing and ordering sources;
— holding awareness-raising events (conferences, seminars, round tables, festivals, environmental exhibitions) in order to increase the environmental consciousness of the population.
