Day of Remembrance of Leopold, Patron Saint of Austria (15/11)

On November 15, some regions of Austria celebrate Leopold Memorial Day, which is an official holiday, in particular in Vienna, Lower and Upper Austria.

Leopold the Saint of the Babenberg dynasty laid the foundations for Austria's future influence. In 1104, he supported Prince Henry's rebellion against his father Emperor Henry IV, thereby securing the favor of the prince, who became the new Holy Roman Emperor in 1105.

Henry V gave his sister as his wife to Leopold, which sharply increased Austria's authority in the empire.

A feature of Leopold's state policy was the maintenance of peaceful and friendly relations with all neighbors, the emperor and the Pope.

Under him, Austria greatly strengthened and expanded its independence within Germany.

Leopold was very active in supporting the church and founded several important monasteries in Austria. This activity of his gave rise to the canonization of Leopold in 1485.

In 1663 he was declared Patron Saint of Austria.
