This professional holiday was established by Decree of the President of the country № 316/04 of March 6, 2004, in order to emphasize the important role of the banking system and the significant contribution of bank employees to the development of the Ukrainian economy and ensuring its financial stability.
In March 1991, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Law «On Banks and Banking Activities», after the adoption of this document, the banking system of Ukraine was formed. Subsequently, by presidential decree № 762/96 of Leonid Kuchma dated August 25, 1996 «On monetary reform in Ukraine», a national monetary unit — hryvnia was introduced in the country.
The banking system of Ukraine includes the National Bank of Ukraine, which is the central bank and pursues a unified state monetary policy, and banks of various types and forms of ownership. Ensuring the stability of the national currency is one of the important tasks of the activities of Ukrainian banks.
Thus, over the years of independence, a modern credit and financial system was built in Ukraine and a national monetary unit was introduced. The National Bank of Ukraine has created an electronic system for making settlements between banking institutions and business entities, the treasury, other institutions, organizations and enterprises that must ensure the full functioning of the country's banking system.
