Day of worship of the honest veriges of the Apostle Peter (29/01)

The worship of the honest veriges of the holy and all-important Apostle Peter is celebrated by the Russian Orthodox Church on January 29, new style.

Around the age of 42, the Apostle Peter, by order of Herod Agrippa, was imprisoned for preaching about Christ the Savior. In the dungeon he was bound by two iron chains.

At night, on the eve of the apostle's trial, the Angel of the Lord removed these chains from him and miraculously brought him out of prison. The Christians, having heard about the miracle, took chains (verigs) and kept them as jewelry.

People obsessed with various diseases received healings when they came to verigas with faith.

The Verigs of Saint Peter the Apostle were kept in Jerusalem until the reign of Patriarch Juvenal, who gave them to Eudokia, the wife of Emperor Theodosius the Younger. In 437 and 439 she moved them from Jerusalem to Constantinople.

Evdokia sent one veriga to Rome to her daughter Eudoxia, who built a temple in the name of the Apostle Peter and placed a veriga in it. There were also other verigas in Rome in which the apostle was before his death under Emperor Nero.

Today, the faiths of the Apostle Peter are brought to the worship of the people.
