International Day of Solidarity of People (20/12)

International Human Solidarity Day has been celebrated annually on December 20, starting in 2006, by decision of the UN.

Solidarity — unity of beliefs and actions, mutual assistance and support of members of a social group, based on common interests and the need to achieve common group goals, shared responsibility.

The International Day of Human Solidarity was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in a resolution (№ 60/209) dedicated to the implementation of the first UN Decade for the Eradication of Poverty. The UN resolution refers to the Millennium Declaration, which states that solidarity is one of the fundamental and universal values of humanity that should underpin international relations in the 21st century.

Therefore this Day is: • by day, as we celebrate our unity in diversity; • in the afternoon when we remind governments that they must respect their obligations relating to international agreements; • a day that helps raise public awareness of solidarity as a fundamental value; • in the afternoon, when we discuss ways to promote solidarity for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, including the eradication of poverty; • a day of action in defence of new initiatives relating to poverty eradication.

Back in 2002, the UN General Assembly established the World Solidarity Fund as a trust fund for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Its goal – is to eradicate poverty and promote human and social development in developing countries, especially among the poorest. UNDP supports change and provides access to knowledge, practical experience and resources to help improve people's lives. This structure operates in 170 countries and territories.

The International Day of People's Solidarity, which is dedicated to a specific theme each year, is covered by all media, including magazine articles, speeches at official events, notes on web blogs by individuals, groups and interested organizations.

On documents and materials that help advance the Day, you can see the UN emblem — projection of the Earth, centered at the North Pole, which covers all continents except Antarctica, and four concentric circles representing longitude levels. The projection is surrounded by olive branches, symbolizing peace.
